So you have finished deciding which of the self storage space units to hire. Now you have to begin filling that space. Maximizing your rental space and making sure your items come out of the storing process the same way they went in, is important.

Make a list of things you might need while your items are stored. If you are storing your items for long term, chances are you will need something at some point of time. Numbering boxes and keeping a list with you will help you locate items in the space at a later date.

When renting one of the units, keep in mind the changing of the seasons if you have to store items over several months. This is especially important when you have things like photographs, piano or electronic equipment to store. Consider renting a climate controlled space that keeps the temperatures controlled within the range of 12 to 26 Celsius.

Once you begin to move things to your rented space, take apart larger items so they are stored more easily. Put bulky things like furniture at the back of the space so you do not have to crawl over them to get access to other things. Also, stand things like beds or couches on end so you can make use of the height of your space. 

If you need to pack away clothing, consider getting a wardrobe box to put them in and also utilize chests of drawers. Shelving units are useful for putting smaller items and boxes on, so do not dismantle them but put them close to the wall and stack stuff on them.

If any large appliances like a fridge or freezer are going into the space, remember to leave the doors on them slightly open so that they do not become stale or moldy from within. Putting satchets of baking soda can help prevent mold from growing in them while they are stored in one of the units. For anything that uses fuel like a lawn mower, weed whacker or motorcycle, be sure to drain the gas completely from them. Also any items that might rust while not in use could benefit from having a bit of oil applied to them.

Be sure to leave a walkway in the middle of the space as you begin to stack boxes and items. This will give you good access to your items if you need to get something out. Place lighter boxes on top of the heavier ones. And make sure to put things like books or items that are heavy in smaller boxes so they do not become too heavy to carry. Breakable items like Chinaware should be packed carefully with paper between and around them and then placed where nothing will be stacked on top of them. Also put boxes with items you might need in an accessible place in the space.

Important papers should be stored in a fireproof safe and other papers might do well to be placed in plastic containers. While most of the units may never experience issues with fire or water, it is always better to be safe than sorry.
