May Day For Self Storage

 It is May and everyone in the self storage industry is very excited.  This is the time of year when business really starts to pick up.  The industry is even more excited this year with the economy on the upswing.

Spring is a popular time of year for people to rent mini storage for many different reasons.  Students, charities, and homeowners all find offsite storage to be a very useful service for their circumstances.

Students are a huge renter of self storage units in the month of May.  Many colleges and universities get out of school this time of year.  The parents of underclassmen rent mini storage units for their kids because they have already converted their former bedrooms into sewing rooms, work shops, and guest spaces.  Or younger siblings have claimed the room as their own.  Parents no longer have the space to store everything the student has amassed over the school year.  New college graduates often rent storage as they search for their first grown up job or accept an out of state internship or simple travel abroad to try to “find themselves”.

Spring Fever is a common ailment this time of year.  People have been cooped up indoors all winter long and feel the need to reorganize or even redecorate their homes.  Renting a storage space for a few months can be very helpful as they decide the perfect cure for this ailment.  They often put their unwanted items into a garage sale, since one man’s junk is another man’s treasure.

Garage sale participants are common mini storage renters for many reasons.  Charities utilize rental space as a place to keep donated items until the day of the rummage sale.  That way no one person has to store all of these goods in their home.  Other people like to shop at garage sales and then sell their purchases for a profit on an online auction site.  These folks also use ministorage to stockpile their wares until they can find the ideal buyer.

Oftentimes, the perfect cure for Spring Fever is to simply go ahead and move.  Again, renting a storage unit can come in very helpful in this situation. Apartment renters use the ministorage as they transition from one residence to another.  People that are building a new home use it as they bunk with friends and relatives until the new house is complete. 

Spring is the preferred time of year for homeowners to put their houses on the market.  Real estate agents are notorious for telling these homeowners to rent a mini storage unit so they can de-clutter and de-personalize the house.  This practice makes the house appear larger and more appealing to people searching to purchase their perfect new residence.  And hopefully helps the homeowner to sell their current house faster.

And now there are signs the economy is improving throughout the country.  This is good for everyone, including selfstorage companies.  People are getting better paying jobs and are able to move into bigger houses and once again take vacations.  New houses are being built and vacation destinations are getting busier, so these companies are hiring new employees.  These employees are spending more money at local stores and businesses.  And people throughout this cycle often need to rent a self storage unit for one reason or another.
